Why did you become a children’s books author? Where you interested in stories and pictures as a child, or was it your own child that needed stories, or is it a way to make the world a better place to live in?

I've always had a story in my head, ever since I learned how to write I started writing stories, but I never thought about writing for Children, not until I got my own ideas. We read a book every night and at the time it was hard to find interesting children's books in Arabic so I started making up my own stories. My kids loved them, and asked me to tell them my own stories every night. After writing around ten stories I thought it was time to share them with other children and that's when I started looking for a publisher.

Do you write also for adults?

I haven't yet written for adults, but I am currently working on a young adults story and hopefully it will see the light soon.

Do you believe that children’s books should be read by grown-ups as well?

I believe that reading children’s books helps to keep us young at heart and imaginative. It’s also a great way to relate better to kids in our life, be they our own children, or friends children, or relatives…

Do you remember when and where your first text was published and how it felt?

My first text was published in 2008 “thyme pastry” by Asala publishers. holding my first story in my hands was a wonderful experience and a beautiful feeling. But what was more amazing was reading it to a group of children and witnessing their beautiful and enthusiastic reactions.

Do you have a favorite among your books?

Actually I have three favorite books, my first book “Thyme pastry” is definitely one of them. The second one is “Bak bik the chicken” by Kalimat, my second published book and my first book to win an Award. The third favorite is the most recently published by Acadmia “Memory of the city”, the book is about my childhood and my daily journey in the streets of my city.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on a young adult story and a children’s play.
Writing is something I do daily, I write because my mind drifts to daydreams of stories. I love to get those stories and characters out of my brain, and onto the paper.

Internationella bibliotekets barnboksvecka infaller 9 - 15 november.
